Weekly UI #1: How to Get Started in UX

The three most common questions I get asked when sitting on a panel or talking with design students and junior designers are:

  1. How do I get started?
  2. How do I build up my portfolio?
  3. What do you do for inspiration?

And I get it. The path into this field feels a little like a labyrinth. Every UX Designer you talk to seems to have a different origin story and figuring out what yours will be can be a bit daunting.

The good news? The answer to all three of these questions is pretty simple: Just make something. Follow a prompt, redesign something you already know, start a side project, whatever it is, just start making! I’ve recently started the infamous DailyUI Challenge myself—complete a design prompt every day for 100 days.

The only tricky part about all this is that it can be really hard if you’re not used to doing it—so let’s do one together!

The plan is to post more of these each week, we’ll call it a Weekly UI. Feel free to follow along!

Heads up! This article may make reference to the Gaslight team—that's still us! We go by Launch Scout now, this article was just written before we re-introduced ourselves. Find out more here.
